Are you one of the many Americans who now wants to know what Facebook knows about you? Well, with all of the recent news surrounding Facebook and data security, here is an easy way to help answer this question for yourself by following the 4 simple steps below to download and see your own data captured on Facebook. As a side note, it took facebook around 10 minutes from the time of my data request to when they provided me with a link to finally download my data from their system – which will be provided to you in a ZIp file format. FWIW was there anything here I was surprised to see? Not really…this is social media. So check for yourself… (see security update steps below this image)
By the way – if you are uncomfortable with what Facebook knows about you then you will likely be VERY uncomfortable with what Google knows about you as well – which is many cases dwarfs your Facebook data by including things such as: every search you have made, your Google calendar events, every location you have visited and how long you were there, all images and files you have downloaded, every ad you clicked, every youtube video you have watched, and every email you have sent or received. You can access your Google data at: https://takeout.google.com/settings/takeout. WARNING: This file can be very large and take a long time to download!
And for those of you who want Facebook to stop sharing your data with other sites, simply follow the steps below and “disable” all four apps on your account. NOTE: If you disable these features, you will not be able to login to other websites and apps using your Facebook profile to authenticate. In short, if you like the convenience of accessing other websites and apps using your Facebook login, this may not be a good idea for you.
